Class of 2012

On June 23, five former athletic standouts and the Wildcats’ longtime radio and television announcer will be inducted into the UNH Athletics Hall of Fame on June 23 in Lundholm Gymnasium. Recognized for their athletic accomplishments will be Greg Blaisdell ’03 (alpine sking), Darren Haydar ’02 (men’s hockey), Stephan Lewis ’02 (football), Nicole Mullins ’94 (gymnastics), and Ellen Weinberg-Hughes ’91, ’94G (women’s hockey, women’s soccer, and women’s lacrosse). Jim Jeannotte, who has called UNH football and men’s and women’s basketball games since 1981, will receive the Joan Leitzel Award for his contribution to the lives of countless UNH student-athletes over the past 32 years.
The Class of 2012 joins more than 300 inductees who have been recognized for their outstanding achievement and contribution to the storied history of UNH athletics.
Hockey player Haydar was a standout on the 1999 and 2002 Frozen Four teams and in 2002, his senior campaign, was also named a Hobey Baker Hat Trick finalist as one of the top three hockey players in the nation. Lewis graduated from UNH as the best combination rusher/receiver in Wildcat football history, the only player ever to rank among the top-10 in both rushing yards (third) and receptions (sixth).
Mullins went from being a freshman walk-on to leading the gymnastics team to its only NCAA Regional Championship and a school-record number-12 national team ranking her senior year. Skier Blaisdell was a four-time NCAA All-American and UNH record-holder for the most points scored in a season and career. Weinberg, who lettered in ice hockey, soccer, and lacrosse, served as assistant coach for both the women’s ice hockey and soccer teams after graduation and as a hockey player on the U.S. National Team, earned a silver medal at the 1992 World Championship.
Jeannotte will become just the third Leitzel Award winner, joining former assistant football and hockey player and coach David O’Connor ’66 and the late James Urquhart, who coached the UNH men’s lacrosse team for 17 years and the wrestling team for 11. Named New Hampshire Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA) a record 23 times, Jeannotte first served a stint calling UNH football games from 1974-79 and has been the official voice of the Wildcats since his return to the University in 1981.
