Hubbard Family Award for Service to Philanthropy

Congratulations to Virginia Theo-Steelman ’62, ’69G and David C. Steelman ’67, ’70G, recipients of the 2009 Hubbard Family Award for Service to Philanthropy. The Steelmans will be recognized, along with new members of the Elliott, Atkins, and Milne Societies at the annual Hubbard Award Dinner.

In addition to honoring the University’s generous benefactors, this evening will commemorate the UNH Foundation’s anniversary with special gratitude to Valerie C. England ’54, the 2009 Volunteer of the Year.

Each year new inductees will receive a framed print chosen by the UNH Foundation for its beauty and significance. The print will be different each year. For 2008, the Foundation chose Thompson Hall, painted by artist and graphic designer Christine Hodgson, a UNH staff member of Editorial and Creative Services.

The Power of Philanthropy

Hubbard Family Award for Service to Philanthropy

The Board of Directors of the University of New Hampshire Foundation, Inc. established the Hubbard Family Award for Service to Philanthropy in 2001 to honor the Hubbard family, well known at the University for its remarkable generosity, and to recognize individuals whose philanthropic leadership and gifts have strengthened the University of New Hampshire and/or who have promoted philanthropy throughout the state.


Honorary Societies

Milne Society

Cumulative gifts of $1,000,000 or more

Douglas and Helena McElwain Milne were generous benefactors of the University throughout their lives. They are perhaps best known for their gifts in support of Dimond Library's special collections.

Atkins Society

Cumulative gifts of $500,000 or more

Reginald F. Atkins was a member of the class of 1928, and spent most of his life as a member of the commodities exchange. Upon his death in 1992, Atkins entrusted his estate to the University for scholarships, an endowed chair, and athletics facilities.

Elliott Society

Cumulative gifts of $100,000 or more

John S. Elliott was a member of the class of 1915, and was founder of the Elliott Rose Company in Madbury, New Hampshire. Elliott honored the University through a lifetime of leadership as a University System trustee, state legislator, and benefactor.


President’s Council

Membership in the President's Council is awarded to individuals or couples who contribute $1,000 or more during the UNH fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Gifts may include any combination of cash or securities, real or personal property, or deferred gifts. Lifetime membership is awarded when an individual's or couple's lifetime contributions reach a total of $25,000 or more. Matching gifts are included in giving totals. Members of the President's Council receive special recognition in the Honor Roll and Annual Report to Donors.
